Reta Shaw

September 13, 1912 – January 8, 1982

No, I don’t approve of men, loud music, alcohol, and, uh, whoop-dee-doing.

Reta Shaw
Reta Shaw

Housekeeper, overbearing wife, housekeeper, dotty neighbor, ex con, housekeeper…  asturdy woman and she’s one of my favorites.

Reta (I’ve always wondered if it was pronounced RETTA) died in Encino, CA of emphysema.

She was cremated and is inurned in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

She was on The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

Earworm of the day.

Saw Rita Shaw in the earily ’80’s at the Director’s Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. An “industry” location (open to the public) that used to show marvelous films and which naturally attracted people in the profession. Immediately recognized Miss Shaw walking across the lobby. The sad part was she had a clear plastic mask over her nose and mouth connected to a narrow tank of oxygen on wheels. She appeared bright, alert and active and wasn’t going to let her illness slow her down just then –

Reta was a native of South Parish, Maine. Her ancestors went back to 1820 in Maine.
She lived in San Fernando Valley – near studios and had 1 daughter named Kathryn Anne (born approx 1957). Reta was married to Willam Forester but divorced by the late 60s during her busiest TV guest role years. A 1969 article described her as active in PTA and with her daughter’s Girl Scout Troop.

She played Aunt Hagatha on Bewitched in 1971 wearing the same dress she wore in an early appearance as witch Bertha in 1964. Back then, day players would supply their own wardrobe as needed.
